Understanding Pokemon type matchups is the foundation of competitive and in-game battling. Our Pokemon type calculator lets you look up any type combination and instantly see what it is super effective against, what it resists, and what it is weak to.
How the Type System Works
Every Pokemon has one or two types. When a move hits a Pokemon, the damage is multiplied based on how the move’s type interacts with the defending Pokemon’s type(s). A move can be: Super effective (2x damage), Not very effective (0.5x damage), Immune (0x damage — no effect at all), or Neutral (1x normal damage).
When a Pokemon has two types, both multipliers apply. For example, a Fire move hitting a Bug/Steel type is 4x super effective (2x for Bug and 2x for Steel). However, a Poison move hitting a Ghost/Dark type has 0x effectiveness because Ghost types are immune to Normal moves and Dark types… and the chain continues.
All 18 Pokemon Types
The 18 Pokemon types are: Normal, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, and Fairy. Fairy type was introduced in Generation 6 (Pokemon X and Y) to balance out the previously overpowered Dragon and Dark types.
Type Chart Gen 3 vs Gen 4 and Beyond
The type chart changed between generations. In Gen 1 and Gen 2, Ghost moves had no effect on Psychic types (a famous bug in Gen 1). The type chart was standardized in Gen 3 with the addition of Steel type resistances and the proper Ghost vs Psychic interaction. Gen 6 introduced the Fairy type, and the type chart has remained the same from Gen 6 through Gen 9.
The type chart Gen 3 is the most commonly referenced chart for classic ROM hacks and fan games, while the Gen 4 type chart is used as the baseline for modern competitive Pokemon.
Rare Type Combinations
Some Pokemon type combinations are extremely rare. Here are some of the rarest dual types and notable Pokemon that have them:
Ghost/Fairy – Mimikyu and Togekiss are notable Fairy types but the Ghost/Fairy combo belongs to Mimikyu (Ghost/Fairy). Extremely rare.
Electric/Bug – This rare combo belongs to Vikavolt (Bug/Electric). The electric bug Pokemon combination offers unique coverage.
Water/Steel – Empoleon (Water/Steel) is the only starter with this combination. Great defensive typing with only two weaknesses.
Bug/Fairy – Ribombee (Bug/Fairy) is one of the only Bug/Fairy Pokemon, making this a very unique defensive profile.
Electric/Ghost – Rotom’s base form is Electric/Ghost, one of the strangest and most useful type combos.
Steel/Flying – Skarmory and Celesteela are Steel/Flying Pokemon, giving them excellent defensive coverage.
